Federal
Cartridge Company
The Ammunition Industry's Technology Leader
Eighty years in the making, Federal
Cartridge Company is today the technology leader
in the ammunition industry.
Located in Anoka, Minnesota, Federal
is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Edina, Minnesota-based
ATK, Alliant Techsystems. With a work force of nearly
1,000, Federal manufactures a complete line of shotshell,
centerfire and rimfire ammunition and components.
Federal Cartridge Company focuses
on technology, advancing the state of the art in
product performance, and the fundamentals - better
quality, better service, and lower delivered cost
to the customer.
In the 90's more than $50 million was invested in
renovations to the factory, including a new distribution
center. Federal also reorganized production facilities
for greater efficiencies, instituted a just-in-time
manufacturing process, and significantly expanded
its product development staff.
These changes were necessary to achieve
the company's goal of producing the most technologically
advanced ammunition in the world. The improvements
have paid off for recreational shooters, hunters,
law enforcement officials, and even Olympians.
In 1992, Launi Meili and Bob Foth shot Federal's .22
UltraMatch ammunition to win gold and silver medals,
respectively, at the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in
Barcelona, Spain.
At the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, U.S.
shooters Kim Rhode, Josh Lakatos and Lance Bade
won gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively,
in trap shooting competitions, firing Federal's
Gold Medal International Paper shells.
The 2002 U.S. Biathlon Team again
chose Federal UltraMatch .22 Long Rifle ammunition
in their quest for Olympic GOLD at the Soldier Hollow
Olympic Biathlon Venue in Heber City, Utah.
New technological advancements by Federal in the
'90s include: decomposable wads in Premium Steel;
Tactical brand loads for law enforcement officers;
BallistiClean™, the world's first and only
lead-free/non-toxic training ammunition for indoor
ranges; High Energy Rifle ammunition, named by industry
officials as the 1996 Ammunition of the Year; Personal
Defense ammunition, which was 1997 Ammunition of
the Year; and a line of Tungsten shotshells heralded
as "revolutionary" waterfowl loads.
In 1997, Federal was named Hunting
& Shooting Sports Manufacturer of the Year by
the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers.
In 2001, Federal was named Ammunition
of the Year by the National Association of Sporting
Goods Wholesalers.
