Manitoba Magic

Rough Gear > Moose Calls
Rough Cooking > Whole Grilled Moose Tenderloin
in Black Currant Glaze

In this episode Thomas travels to Northern Manitoba for an exciting full rut moose hunt with a compound bow. The word moose comes from the Algonquin First Nations people who are native to many northern regions of Canada. The Algonquin called this strange looking creature mooswa; meaning "twig-eater" or "the animal that strips bark off trees".

Northern Manitoba is a vast expanse of marshland, muskeg, forests, and lakes, making this an ideal habitat for trophy moose. Hunting moose during the rut can prove to be very productive but if you're using calls be on guard at all times. You wouldn't want a big bull to mistake you for its mate or a rival.

Chef Michael Olson works his culinary magic once again as he prepares some delicious moose steaks and Rough Gear blows its horn as we take a look at the art of calling for moose and examines some of the options available for the expert and novice caller alike.

Please join us as Thomas draws the bow and sets his sights on the big bulls of Northern Manitoba.
