ATV In & Outs

ATVs have opened a world of hunting opportunities that our fathers could only dream of and have evolved to a “must have” item for the serious outdoorsman. Whether it’s hauling gear into camp, hauling game back to the truck, or just getting away from the crowds, the ATV has made its mark and is here to stay. So let’s take a look at some of the features you should look for in your next ATV purchase.

One of the most significant advances in ATV technology is the introduction of electronic power steering. With the addition of EPS those bone jarring jerks when you hit an unexpected rock or pothole are all but gone and maneuvering in tight places is a dream. EPS dramatically reduces your overall steering effort; especially in 4wd. And it will add considerably to your enjoyment of the journey; particularly for those with less upper body strength.

A bike with a good power to weight ratio means easier handling for the rider and improved overall efficiency. Combine this with a high torque output at the low end and you’ll have plenty of muscle to climb that last steep trail or crawl through a rock strewn creek bed on your way back to camp.

Fuel is heavy and if the gas tank is situated high on the bike it can affect your center of gravity making the bike top heavy. A bike that positions the gas tank lower on the frame will offer better stability on uneven terrain or when climbing hills.

Not being able to get going might be an inconvenience, but not being able to stop can be disastrous. The addition of disc brakes on all 4 wheels will ensure quick efficient stopping power when needed. Combine that with a transmission that delivers engine braking to all 4 wheels during deceleration and you’ll have all the stopping power you’re likely to need.

Remember to treat our trails responsibly and enjoy your next ATV adventure.
