Gas or Diesel Engines

Ahhh, the age old question; should my new truck be gas or diesel? And guess what, it really depends on your personal preference combined with how you intend to use your new vehicle.

Gas has been the mainstay of trucks and cars alike. It is considered cleaner burning, more responsive, easier to start on cold winter mornings, quieter and more readily available. On top of that the base price of a gas engine is significantly lower than a diesel engine. So why even consider a diesel? Well let’s look at some of the traditional arguments and then blend in some technical enhancements being made to the modern diesel engine.

If you intend to use your new vehicle to carry or tow heavy loads the diesel is well worth a look. If you are trailering a heavy load like a fifth-wheel or cargo trailer, like we use here at Canada in the Rough, you will eventually recoup the base cost of the diesel through improved fuel consumption. At the same time you will achieve much greater low-end torque, which translates into faster off the line starts, less engine strain on long grades, and the ability to merge quickly with highway traffic.

But what about emissions? Won’t I be contributing to the overall emissions problem if I buy a diesel? Well that used to be true but with this years introduction of the Cummins BlueTec engine you can now own a truck with a diesel engine and keep a clear conscience at the same time. This engine dramatically reduces emissions and already meets EPA standards for the 2010 model year for diesel engines. On top of that you can expect between a 20 and 40% improvement in fuel consumption over the already efficient traditional diesel engine.

The diesel isn’t for everyone or for every situation. Evaluate your needs carefully but don’t overlook the benefits that the diesel engine can provide to those who need that extra punch for heavy loads.
