Over & Unders

Ask any upland wing shooter what type of gun they prefer and you will invariably get the same answer. A double barrel shotgun in an over and under configuration will be the resounding reply. This style of shotgun is extremely safe, reliable, and very low maintenance. Because of the lack of moving parts over and unders are some of the most durable guns on the market.

The over and under also offers the hunter the flexibility of having two different chokes in the same gun. Because upland hunting tends to be very spontaneous the hunter will be able to take that second shot and still use a choke that is appropriate for the longer range. Waterfowlers’ that use an over & under lean towards a 12 gauge with a longer barrel to swing on passing birds. The dedicated upland hunter often favors a 20 gauge with a short 28” barrel, making it light and fast.

Whatever your preference there are a few things to consider. Look for a gun that offers a forged receiver that is totally enclosed. This will ensure superior strength and will greatly reduce wear. Be sure the locking lugs are self-adjusting so they will remain tight over the life of the gun.

A gun that provides a maximum amount of recoil reduction will certainly pay dividends when you’re priming your skills at the range in preparation for hunting season. You may only fire a dozen shots a day – if your lucky – in the field, but firing dozens of rounds at clay pigeons can certainly take its toll.

It could be the perfect balance or natural pointability, or perhaps quick target acquisition that allows the shooter to get a shot off quickly, but there’s just something about the fit and feel of an over and under that other shotguns just can’t touch when it comes to upland hunting.

Shop for quality and your over and under purchase is sure to last a lifetime…and more.
