Broadheads for Bears

When selecting a broadhead for your bear hunting adventure remember that you need to penetrate thick fur, a thick hide, layers of fat, and withstand glancing blows with bone before ever reaching the vital organs. I like a 125 grain broadhead and they must be razor sharp. If you are hunting over bait the average shooting distance from a treestand is seldom more than 20 yards, so drop-off is not a big concern.

Then you have the choice of chisel point or cut on contact tips. Cut on contact tips slice through the hide at the point of impact where chisel points punch through the hide before beginning to cut. Although a bit of kinetic energy is lost with the chisel point it is able to withstand bone crunching impact that could damage cut on contact tips. Again considering that you are typically shooting within 20 yards the loss of energy is of little real concern.

Sometimes the most dangerous part of the hunt can be in the preparation; especially when you need to fiddle with razor sharp blades and “0” rings when assembling your broadheads. That’s why we recommend a broadhead that’s already assembled and all the hunter needs to do is screw it securely onto the shaft.

Something else to consider, especially for larger game or thick hide game like bears, is switching to a compact 4-blade broadhead. You’ll likely have some assembly work to do but with the proper setup they are extremely accurate and the additional cutting surface combined with the bone crunching tip can be devastating and will ensure superior penetration and maximum blood trail.

Select broadheads based on your setup, type of game, and environment your hunting in and you’ll put more game on the table.
