Season 3 Rough Gear List > Episode 8 Rough Gear

Dodge Trucks / Navigation

Well the guns are stowed, the truck is loaded and as they say, getting there is half the fun.  Getting there might be half the fun but getting lost along the way or sitting for hours in a traffic jam certainly is not.

Technology has made tremendous advancements over the past several years and modern travelers now have the advantage of GPS devices that will remove a lot of the frustration of getting from home to your hunting location.

Many newer vehicles come with a GPS mounted right into the dashboard.  And with a few easy steps they will plot your route for you on a turn by turn basis.  You will get an audible alarm that will give you plenty of advanced notice of an upcoming turn and the notification is generally related to your speed of travel.  The faster you are going the greater the distance at which you will be notified of turns.

Some map software also gives you the advantage of being able to upload current construction data along your intended route allowing you to completely avoid many traffic tie ups due to construction .  After all Canada really only has two seasons – winter and construction.

Although GPS models specifically designed for automobile use usually have a larger viewing screen, it is good to know that your trusty portable GPS that you use in the field – provided it will accept and display mapping software – will give you most of the same features as a built-in model.  It can be mounted on a portable mounting device in your vehicle, plugged into the cigarette lighter and angled to give you an optimum view of the map.

If you don’t have one, get one.   It sure makes getting there a lot more fun.
