Avery Layout Blinds

When hunting waterfowl the art of concealment is just as important to a successful hunt as your firearm; the type of load; and the set of your decoys. Pre hunt knowledge of the area you will be hunting is absolutely necessary to ensure that you are able to provide the best possible cover for you and your hunting companions… human or canine.

One of the most practical options I have discovered for a wide variety of hunting situations is the layout blind. It’s portable, comfortable, and is quick and easy to set up. In fact many models can – with a bit of practice – be set up in under a minute.

The type of blind you choose will depend on where you intend to do most of your hunting and Avery has a blind to fill every need. Will you be in an open cornfield or will you be in a wet area where you may need extra waterproofing to keep warm and dry. The best places to hunt are not always the easiest places to hide.

Some of the features to look for in a good layout blind are:

  • Does it have sufficient padding to keep you comfortable for several hours?
  • Is it rain resistant?
  • Does it allow for a good shooting angle?
  • Does it afford good visibility in all directions?
  • Do I need room for my canine companion? Not only will this keep your dog hidden, it will help keep your toes toasty warm.
  • What camo patterns are available? If you're hunting a snow covered cornfield a hardwood pattern is not likely the most effective.
  • How much does it weigh? Slogging a heavy blind through muddy corn stubble is not the nicest way to start your hunt. Many of today's blinds are compact and weigh in at under 20 pounds.
  • Be sure the blind fits. You not only need to take your size into consideration but consider the additional bulk of your hunting clothes.
Take the time to select the right blind; combine that with well practiced calling and decoy setup and the birds are as good as in the pan.
