Compound Bows

The modern compound bow affords the hunter a high level of accuracy and speed that make it the tool of choice for most contemporary bowhunters. In many regions of the country bow hunters enjoy an extended archery season that is often measured in months rather than weeks allowing the compound bow hunter ample opportunity to perfect his or her skills.

Compound bows offer draw weights of between 40 and 80 pounds. For Thomas 60 to 65 pounds is just right and is more than enough for virtually all North American game. But let your own comfort level help you make that determination. It's important to match the bow to your strength and physique. There is no point in buying a bow with a 75 pound pull if you can only comfortably draw and hold 60.

With let-offs ranging from 60- 85% when your cams roll over you'll be holding only a fraction of this weight at full draw. And when a buck is hung up behind standing timber, let-off is the difference between taking the shot or letting your buck of a lifetime walk away.

There is no doubt that in terms of compound bow hunting; speed kills. A deer's natural instinct is to flinch - often called jumping the string - the moment it hears even the slightest noise and senses pending danger. Modern compound bows are being super engineered to deliver blistering speeds of 300 feet per second and more that beat deer at their own game every time.

Most premium bows on the market today have dampening systems that eliminate a significant amount of noise created by the explosive nature of bow limbs flying into action, once again moving the advantage to the well equipped archer.

Whether you are looking to get into the world of bow hunting for the first time or upgrading your existing equipment, the one word of advice I can offer is don't go cheap.

Developing the skill necessary to deliver a kill shot with confidence at 20 to 30 yards is a continuous process requiring a great deal of practice. Invest the time and money to select the equipment that's right for you and you'll enjoy terrific bow hunting adventures for years to come.
