Venison Stew with Chilies and Chocolate

  Serves 4
  
2 lbs venison stewing meat
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup onions, diced
1 cup carrots, diced
1 cupturnips, diced
1 cup mushrooms, quartered
1 fresh jalapeno chile

2 Tbsp

flour
4 cups beef broth
2 Tbsp cocoa powder
   

Season meat with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a heavy bottom casserole and brown meat in 2 batches then set aside. Add onions, carrots & turnips and cook over medium heat 5 minutes. Add mushrooms, jalapeno and flour and cook to brown flour slightly. Add beef broth and return meat. Cover and simmer 75-90 minutes or until the meat is tender.
To finish, whisk in cocoa powder and season to taste with salt and pepper.
